A masterful oil painting depicting a view of a Venice Canal by French artist Maurice Bompard. As a Impressionist and orientalist painter, he was known for his detailed works depicting scenes from daily life; notably The Butchers of Chetma, which was presented at the Salon in 1890. He also created numerous views of Venice during his stays there. This piece is an excellent example of the works produced during that time with the use of a rich color pallet and layers of paint is what gives this work such a stunning representation of Venice. Also the way he uses flecks of light dashed onto the water to emulate reflection of the city and the brilliant blue sky and depiction creates a joy for the viewer to experience. This work is signed lower left and comes displayed in a wonderful antique style gold leaf with a brown crackle trimmed frame with hanging wire on verso.
CONDITION: This painting has been professionally lined, it shows some minor craquelure at the top in the blue sky and a surface scuff lower left with ordinary wear from age, otherwise is in very good condition for the time period.
