CONVERGENCY
Hunt Slonem & Robert Mars - September 21 to October 18, 2023
Lilac Gallery New York is pleased to present “Convergency” an exhibition of works by Hunt Slonem & Robert Mars. Bringing together for the first time at Lilac, an outstanding collection of lavishly colored pieces that converge to create an explosive exhibit filled with striking colors, vibrant textures and explorative themes. Where both artists share a strong sense of repetition and pattern making, wavering between abstract expressionism and neo expressionism, inviting the viewer to a world that lets you play and be filled with wonder. Running from September 21 to October 18, 2023.
Hunt Slonem is beloved for his radiant energy and velocity in creating Bunnies, Birds, and Butterflies. Within the layers of the show, his latest collection of "Tulips" are revealed along with an extremely rare piece of Hummingbirds and Marilyn Monroe, representing themes of spiritual harmony and iconic legacy. Slonem has consistently revisited the same subject matter and has spent years perfecting and refining his techniques including the highly textural appeal of “cross hatch” works that by altering the surface, seem to weave an other-worldly net, or curtain, between the subject and the viewer by simultaneously revealing and hiding aspects of the paintings.
While Slonem creates beautiful, surprising scenes that offer a calming joy to those who encounter it, he continues his tradition of utilizing intense colors of the neo-expressional style while working on collections which will strive to amaze the viewer. "Convergency" focuses on Slonems main subjects while revealing new and exciting collections of works, which weave these themes of spiritual iconicity into the world of Robert Mars, creating an exciting dialogue which can be found in the splendor of the show.
As Slonem concentrates mostly on spiritual themes, Robert Mars taps into emotional themes that vacillate between memory and desire. Mars explores the taste of nostalgia, pulling the viewer towards iconic stars and consumerist historical subjects. This is defined through the showstopper of the exhibit "From Americas Best Loved" a large powerful piece of Marilyn Monroe, intertwining Dom Perignon with the theme of legacy and passion. Through his body of work, Mars layers brands like Tiffany and Co and Christian Dior, with phenomenons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly; celebrating icons of the Golden Era with expressive and bold colors all the while, tying into the world of Hunt Slonem, by use of repetition and application of materials. Both artists capture moments in history, glorifying icons such as Marliyn Monroe in their own right and themes of spirituality, as "Convergency" serves as a vehicle to bridge concepts rooted in the abstract terrene.
